Virginia Tech Basketball: Former Hokies' 4-star recruit enters the transfer portal
Virginia Tech should look to try and kick the tires with Louisville transfer Brandon Huntley-Hatfield for the 2024-25 season.

If there is one thing for sure for the Virginia Tech men’s basketball team, it’s that the 2024-25 roster will look different. A lot different. This week has seen a mass exodus from Blacksburg with several players entering the transfer portal.
We knew that Robbie Beran and Hunter Cattoor were out of eligibility after Saturday night’s loss at Ohio State in the NIT. Still, the roster was gutted more by Sean Pedulla, Lynn Kidd, MJ Collins, Mylyjael Poteat, and John Camden entering the portal. With Collins, Kidd, and Pedulla entering, head coach Mike Young will have a brand new starting five.
With several scholarship players needed, the transfer portal is going to be the way for Young and his staff to fill out a roster. One player who Virginia Tech offered in recruiting a couple of years ago entered the transfer portal and would be a good addition to the Hokies if Young decides to kick the tires on him again.
Brandon Huntley-Hatfield enters the transfer portal
In June of 2020 during the pandemic, Huntley-Hatfield was offered by Virginia Tech and later that summer, the Hokies made a list of his final 11 schools. He ended up signing with Tennessee before transferring to Louisville. By now it’s well-known that Louisville moved from Kenny Payne and Wednesday hired Pat Kelsey and shortly after, Huntley-Hatfield entered the portal.

The 6-10 junior averaged 12.9 points and 8.4 rebounds per game this season. Began his career at Tennessee.

This season, the 6-foot-10, 240-pound forward was second on the Cardinals in scoring with 12.7 points a game with 8.4 rebounds a night and shot 56.7% from the field. He played twice against Virginia Tech last season.
Huntley-Hatfield would come in and be an instant starter and producer for Young and the Hokies, however, there are going to be plenty of other schools and coaches recruiting him as well. A four-star recruit in the Class of 2021, he is the type of player that Virginia Tech and Young need to bring, an athletic wing who can score the ball and rebound. It’s certainly worth pursuing him again if you’re Mike Young.
